Who would have thought it, when I was that young girl playing around in the garden making flower lotions and potions, this is where my passion would take me. Now living in the Andalusian countryside surrounded by Lemons, Oranges, Almonds, Advocado, Olives and more. I feel very privileged to be able to enjoy the scents of these fruits when they come into blossom and know how beneficial they can be not only to my wellbeing also to my mind, helping me to feel uplifted, balanced and grounded. Above are some Essential Oils that I use in producing my Soaps and Skincare and below I have attached some pictures of what I have growing in my garden.
For centuries plants have been part of our life, their medicinal purposes have helped in many ways. Sadly, the Western World today mainly consists of large cities where we live in an environment that is more open to pollution. Stress levels continue to rise causing risk to health and well being. Many people are turning to seek help from nature and alternative therapies, rather than a visit to the Docs, along with looking at herbs and essential oils to help reverse the affects of urban life.
Essential Oils are extracted from plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, seeds, roots and grasses. These oils contain the essential life force of the plants that promote plant growth, aid in reproduction by attracting pollinating insects, repel predators and protect against disease. They are very potent, that is why it is recommended to use only a small amount of these oils. When we blend the wonderful, pure and fragrant oils, they create a most enjoyable and effective product. The essences can be used for massage, skincare, haircare and as deodorants to keep fresh all day. They are the most powerful therapeutic agents known to man, being used throughout history for their healing purposes.
Despite their name, essential oils are not oils but are aromatic, volatile substances or essences extracted from a tree, plant, herb or flower by distillation or expression. It is a labor-intensive process resulting in an oil that will enhance your wellbeing. The Egyptians were known to use aromatic oils as early as 4500 B.C.E. One of the famous herbal remedies they made was called “Kyphi”, it was a mixture of 16 ingredients including balsams, perfumed oils, scented barks, resins, spices and aromatic vinegars. “Ayur Veda” traditional Indian Medicine goes back over 3000 years where they would make healing potions with essential oils like cinnamon, ginger, myrrh and sandalwood. This form of healing is still used today. French Chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé while investigating the antiseptic properties of essential oils, created the term “Aromatherapie” . Gattefossé discovered the incredible healing properties of Lavender . An accident occurred where one of his hands was badly burned in his laboratory, quickly he immersed it into a tray of liquid, he was astonished to see his hand healed with no infection or scarring, the liquid was Lavender.
When working with Essential Oils, it is recommend to use a Carrier Oil alongside Essential Oils i.e.: Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Apricot Kernal Oil to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Most Essentials Oils are not recommended to apply direct to the skin and always seek advice before using oils during pregnancy.
Essential Oils can be used as a great natural, complementary health treatment in a variety of situations:-
- Relaxation and stress relief
- Mood enhancement, balance and well being
- Relief of minor discomforts
- Boosting the immune, respiratory and circulatory systems
They are classified by the “note” or scent. There are an abundance of Essential Oils on the market today, it is a good idea to generally use an oil that is 100% therapeutic.
Top Note oils are generally from flowers, leaves and flowering herbs. These oils give off a citrus scent. Exposed to the air, they do not hold their smell as long. When blended with other oils, the top note is usually the one which you will smell first. They are the uplifting and stimulating oils. Some of the oils we use are:- Lemongrass, Lemon, Lime, Peppermint, Orange, Spearmint, & Tea Tea. (Note: Some citrus oils can be photosensitive, use with caution in direct sunlight).
Middle Note oils are derived from spices, flowers and herbs. These oils give off a floral scent. They are the balancing oils and blend well with top and base notes. Some of the oils we use are:- Geranium, Lavender, Neroli, Peppermint & Rosemary.
Base Note oils are generally from resins and gums of the trees. They are the heady/spicy scents. These oils are some of the earliest oils used by man. Just like the roots of a tree are grounded these oils give us a feeling of being grounded. Some of the oils we use are:- Frankincense, Ginger, Patchouli & Ylang Ylang.
